Health Sciences North delivering cutting-edge cancer care close to home for Northeastern Ontario

At Health Sciences North (HSN), a quiet revolution in cancer care is changing what’s possible for patients across Northeastern Ontario.

Through its stereotactic radiosurgery program, the Radiation Oncology team with the Shirley and Jim Fielding Northeast Cancer Centre is delivering precise, high-dose radiation treatments that can destroy cancer in as few as one to five visits, often replacing the need for invasive surgery.

For patients, the difference is profound.

Where traditional treatment for certain cancers once meant surgery, hospital stays, and weeks of recovery, many patients can now receive treatment in minutes, without incisions, anesthesia, or overnight stays. Instead of facing the risks and recovery associated with surgery, patients are able to return home the same day and resume their daily lives much sooner.

Boil Water Advisory Lifted

The boil water advisory has been lifted for affected areas of Greater Sudbury.

Please note it will take several hours for crews to fully flush the system at HSN before water is safe to drink from all taps and fountains and operations return to normal. We ask everyone to be patient and continue following posted signage and instructions across the hospital.

Thank you to our staff, patients, families, and community for your patience, understanding, and kindness over the past several days.

Celebrating Physician Recruitment Efforts and Advancing Care in Northern Ontario

This Doctors’ Day, Health Sciences North (HSN) proudly recognizes the dedication, compassion, and expertise of its medical staff.

Across every department and specialty, HSN physicians are delivering high-quality care to patients and families throughout Northeastern Ontario, often in the face of growing demand and limited access to primary care across the region. Their commitment ensures patients receive timely, specialized care close to home.

Within this group, HSN’s Hospitalist team plays a critical role in strengthening access to inpatient care. Each day, a team of eight Hospitalist physicians provides care to an average of 130 hospitalized patients, many of whom do not have access to a family physician in the community. Their work supports continuity of care, reduces gaps in service, and helps ensure patients are safely managed from admission through to discharge.

A Crisis Can Happen Anytime — Help Is Here 24/7

A crisis can happen at any time, and it doesn’t always look the way we expect.

It can be overwhelming anxiety that won’t go away. A moment of deep emotional distress. Substance use concerns. Thoughts of suicide. Or concern for someone you care about. In these moments, it can be hard to know where to turn, or even how to take the first step.

At Health Sciences North, we want our community to know one thing: You are NOT alone.

Defying the Odds: HSN’s Hemophilia Program helping kids like Easton live full lives

Easton was born with severe hemophilia A, a rare blood disorder that affects the blood’s ability to clot, a diagnosis that could have changed everything for his family.

“Although we knew there was a risk when we conceived, we hoped maybe we got lucky,” said his mom, Keisha Velcich.

Keisha and Easton’s dad, Mitch, worked closely with their obstetrical team to create a safe birth plan, opting for cord blood testing immediately after delivery rather than prenatal testing. The results came quickly, but their doctor waited until morning to share them.
