The Emergency Department provides care to 63,000 people each year, which includes trauma patients. Trauma is the leading cause of death under the age of 45 in northeastern Ontario and there are 70% more deaths from trauma in northeastern Ontario than in the rest of the province. Services include a comprehensive range of programs, and care is provided to a full spectrum of patients including infants, children, adults and the elderly. Visit the Emergency Department page.

The Trauma Program is an active participant in the Ontario Trauma Registry and Health Sciences North is one of only 11 hospitals in the province given Lead Trauma Hospital designation. As a trauma referral centre, Health Sciences North is able to abstract and contribute data which facilitates the reduction of trauma injury admissions and deaths via planning and evaluation of prevention programs, legislative changes and cost expenditures provincially.
 
The program provides core trauma education, such as Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) and Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS) to health care providers, and maintains an active quality assurance program. Clinical activities include chart reviews, patient and family interactions, ongoing communication with multidisciplinary care teams, quality improvement, research, injury prevention and administration.

The ICU consists of 29 critical care and 12 step-down unit beds. It provides critical care services to the citizens of northeastern Ontario in its tertiary care role in cardiology, cardiac surgery, cardiac rehabilitation, trauma, nephrology and neurosurgery.

The ICU also supports the internal needs of the Emergency and Medical, Surgical, Regional Cancer, Family and Child, Mental Health and Addictions, Ambulatory Care and Cardiac programs, as well as responding to the CritiCall Network. A Critical Care Response Team was initiated at the St. Joseph’s Health Centre in 2006.
