Surgical Evolution campaign aims to transform life-saving care in Northeastern Ontario

Health Sciences North (HSN) Foundation has officially launched its Surgical Evolution campaign, a transformative multi-million dollar fundraising initiative to bring advanced robotic-assisted surgery and a state-of-the-art fixed imaging suite to Northeastern Ontario. Health Sciences North is currently the only academic health sciences centre of its size in Ontario without an advanced robotic-assisted surgery program for cancer care. Every year, more than 150 local patients are forced to travel hundreds of kilometres to Toronto, Hamilton, or Ottawa for specialized procedures, leaving their homes, support systems, and families during some of the most challenging moments of their lives. New research protocol highlights innovative approach to stroke and TIA care at HSN

Health Sciences North’s commitment to improving stroke care in northeastern Ontario is the focus of a newly published research protocol outlining an innovative model designed to bring timely, interdisciplinary assessment directly to patients. Published in JMIR Research Protocols, the paper describes the implementation and evaluation of the MOTIVE Team — Mobile Transient Ischemic Attack and Stroke With Adaptive Workflow, an interdisciplinary mobile stroke service operating across HSN’s Emergency Department and inpatient units. The goal is simple but significant: help the right patients receive rapid medical and functional assessments, support earlier decision-making and discharge planning, and ensure patients continue to receive the specialized care they need.

Partnering to Enhance Patient Care in the North

HSN greatly appreciates the continued partnership with Premier Doug Ford and the provincial government in providing access to specialized care close to home for more than 557,000 people across 300,000 square kilometers in Northeastern Ontario. HSN’s President and CEO, David McNeil, had an opportunity to thank the Premier for recent provincial investments in healthcare to support improved access to care, including an additional $30 million in funding for HSN last year. We also appreciate the continued support from the province on our capital expansion plans. Northeastern Ontario is poised to play an increasingly important role in driving Ontario’s economy through mining and critical minerals. A strong health-care system is essential to attracting people, supporting communities and enabling that growth.

New 3-Stream Waste Stations at Health Sciences North

Health Sciences North (HSN) is committed to providing exceptional care while protecting the health of our environment. As part of this commitment, we are introducing new 3-stream waste stations throughout the hospital to help reduce waste and support more sustainable operations.

As you visit HSN, you'll begin to notice new waste stations with three clearly labelled streams:

Organics (Green)

Food scraps, napkins, paper towels and other compostable materials.

Recycling (Blue)

Clean paper, cardboard, plastic containers, aluminum cans and other recyclable items.

General Waste (Black)

Items that cannot be composted or recycled.

Congratulations to the 2026 graduates of Project SEARCH HSN

Congratulations to the 2026 graduates of Project SEARCH HSN. This year, seven students from Rainbow District School Board celebrated the completion of Project SEARCH, an employment preparation and career training program that combines classroom learning with hands-on internships at Health Sciences North. Throughout the program, students gained valuable workplace experience, built confidence and developed the skills needed to transition successfully into employment. Thank you to our partners at Rainbow District School Board and March of Dimes Canada, as well as the dedicated HSN staff and mentors who helped make this year's program a success. Together, we're creating more inclusive pathways to meaningful employment and helping build a stronger workforce for our community. Congratulations to all of this year's graduates. Thank you for celebrating Pride Week with Health Sciences North!

What an incredible week of celebrating diversity, inclusion, and belonging! Thank you to everyone who joined us at our annual Pride Pancake Breakfast and Sidewalk Painting event.

A special thank you to Greater Sudbury Mayor Paul Lefebvre and Sudbury MPP Jamie West for joining our team at the griddle to help cook and serve pancakes, and to Team HSN and our many volunteers who made the morning such a success.
