HSN and NOSM University Researchers Awarded CIHR Grant to Improve Emergency Care for Patients with Dizziness

Patients across Northern Ontario and beyond will benefit from new research led by Health Sciences North (HSN) and NOSM University, funded through a major grant from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

Dr. Robert Ohle, an Emergency Physician, Vice-President of Academic and Research Impact at Health Sciences North Research Institute (HSNRI), and NOSM University Chair in Indigenous and Rural Health Research, has been awarded a $757,350 CIHR Project Grant for his study: Validation of a Clinical Risk Score to Identify Emergency Department Patients with Serious Causes of Dizziness. Dr. Ohle is the principal investigator on the study.

‘I got my life back’: Sudbury patient shares powerful impact of therapy for bladder dysfunction at HSN

When Ginette Brabant first began experiencing bladder issues five years ago, she never imagined how much it would disrupt her life. The frequent urination, unexpected leaks, pain and inability to fully empty her bladder affected her work, sleep, and confidence. “I missed a lot of work, I was constantly in pain, and I couldn’t sleep through the night,” she said. “I was just so sick.”

Every Breakthrough at Health Sciences North Begins with a Person

Dr. Stacey Santi, the Health Sciences North Foundation Research Chair in Cancer Solutions, remembers meeting a family who had travelled from out of town so their loved one could receive cancer treatment in Sudbury. They had taken time off work and spent money on travel and accommodations just to be there. That conversation made her realize how cancer affects not only the person who is sick—but the whole family, in many different ways.

Five years in, HSN continues to witness the positive impact of a specialized treatment for stroke

Christine Perras arrived at HSN in early June with a stroke, scoring 17 on the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS)—which indicates a moderately severe stroke with significant neurological impairment and higher risk of disability. After receiving an emergency endovascular thrombectomy (EVT), her score dropped to zero, meaning no lasting neurological deficits.

Health Sciences North’s innovative MOTIVE project helping patients recover faster, go home sooner

An innovative stroke care model at Health Sciences North (HSN) is changing the game for stroke patients in the Sudbury District, offering faster access to care and fewer hospital admissions with an aim of easing pressure on a stretched healthcare system.

The MObile TIA and Stroke with AdaptiVE Workflow (MOTIVE) project brings an expert team directly to patients — wherever they are in the hospital — for early assessment, co-ordinated treatment planning, and streamlined access to rehabilitation. A stroke happens when blood stops flowing to a part of the brain, or bleeding occurs in the brain, leading to the death of brain cells.
