Sudbury Scientist Awarded $2 Million in Funding Towards Cancer Prevention Research

Cancer is the leading cause of death in Canada, and rates are on the rise, particularly in younger populations. More than 40% of Canadians are expected to be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. However, new funding to support cancer prevention research provides hope that nearly half of cancer cases could be addressed through improvements in early detection and prevention approaches. Last month, Canada’s Minister of Health, the Honourable Marjorie Michel, together with leaders from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and United Health Network (UHN) in Toronto, made a landmark announcement. Through the CIHR Institute of Cancer Research Bringing Biology to Cancer Prevention Team Grants, six funding organizations, led by CIHR, have come together to invest over $41 million towards basic science cancer prevention research. HSN and NOSM University Researchers Awarded CIHR Grant to Improve Emergency Care for Patients with Dizziness

Patients across Northern Ontario and beyond will benefit from new research led by Health Sciences North (HSN) and NOSM University, funded through a major grant from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

Dr. Robert Ohle, an Emergency Physician, Vice-President of Academic and Research Impact at Health Sciences North Research Institute (HSNRI), and NOSM University Chair in Indigenous and Rural Health Research, has been awarded a $757,350 CIHR Project Grant for his study: Validation of a Clinical Risk Score to Identify Emergency Department Patients with Serious Causes of Dizziness. Dr. Ohle is the principal investigator on the study.

Rylee Restoule Appointed as Indigenous Research Coordinator at HSNRI

Health Sciences North Research Institute (HSNRI) is thrilled to announce the appointment of Rylee Restoule as the Clinical Research Coordinator of Indigenous Health. Rylee, a proud Ojibwe-Kwe from Dokis First Nation and Francophone, is currently pursuing a Master of Health Studies specializing in Health Research. She began volunteering with HSN in 2019 and has since been a member of the Indigenous Health, French Language Services, and Patient and Family Advisory Committees.
