Health Sciences North (HSN) and the Health Sciences North Research Institute (HSNRI) are pleased to be ranked among Canada’s Top 40 Research Hospitals of 2023 by RE$EARCH Infosource.
HSNRI’s researchers are contributing to progress in line with the organization’s key strategic themes, including Cancer Solutions, Mental Health and Addictions (MHA), and Cardiovascular Health. In 2023, HSNRI appointed three new research chairs to provide leadership in these core research areas. Additionally, the search is currently underway for an Indigenous Health research chair to support expansion of this integral research program.
Research Chairs Dr. Stacey Santi (Cancer Solutions), Dr. David Marsh (MHA), and Dr. Mohammed Shurrab (Cardiovascular Health) are involved in ongoing efforts to secure external funding, build academic partnerships, and develop departmental strategies. Their endeavours are an essential part of facilitating access to cutting-edge treatment for patients at HSN.
Research and innovation are essential elements of patient care at HSN. In the words of HSNRI’s Vice President of Research and Academic Impact, Dr. Robert Ohle, “Our research is focused on impacting the lives of our community. Dr Ohle, who is also both an HSN Emergency Room physician and a researcher himself, reinforces that “We support those who are career researchers building knowledge to improve health outcomes over time. We also support frontline staff in effectively implementing innovative care solutions that will mean our patients receive the best possible care today.”
Additional research programs at HSNRI include Emergency Medicine, Anesthesia, Surgery, and Stroke, amongst others. By placing a focus on improving patient care through evidence-based practice, HSN and HSNRI strive to generate research that improves health outcomes for people in Northeastern Ontario.
