Thank you for your interest in joining our volunteer program! Volunteers are valuable members of the Health Sciences North (HSN) community.

There are many advantages to volunteering with HSN:

  • Meet new people
  • Learn new skills
  • Explore interests
  • Gain experience in a health care environment
  • Complete 40 hours of community service
  • Maintain a healthy and active lifestyle

Donating a few hours a week can make a positive difference in someone's life and in your own. Please consider submitting an application to join our team!

Volunteering at Health Sciences North is a commitment. It is important that before you apply, you understand the needs and roles of an HSN volunteer: 

  • The minimum age to volunteer is 15 (at the time of application) 
  • A typical volunteer placement is one (1), 3 hour shift per week.  We can accommodate more upon availability. 
  • Volunteers must have excellent communication in spoken and written English.  Bilingualism is not mandatory but considered an asset. 

We see individuals whose own values complement those of HSN: 

  • Professionalism, a manner that promotes teamwork, fairness, dignity, reliability and respect. 
  • Be accountable for their actions and honour their commitment. 

We do not offer volunteer opportunities in the following areas: 

  • Inpatient Units 
  • Pharmacy 
  • Laboratory 
  • Food Services 
  • Security 
  • Housekeeping 
  • Medical Offices 

Volunteers will not perform or practice the duties and responsibilities of healthcare personnel. 

Job shadowing, observerships or mentoring does not fall under the scope of volunteerism.  You may contact Academic Affairs at academicaffairs@hsnsudbury.ca

 

Step 1 - Email Volunteer Services at volunteerservices@hsnsudbury.ca for a copy of our Volunteer Application Package.

Complete and submit the relevant forms. The application process can take up to 6 weeks to complete. Submit all forms except for the References. You can print, fax or attach your completed paperwork to an email to Volunteer Services. Completion of the application process does not guarantee a placement at HSN  

Step 2 - Interview 

We contact successful applicants via email or by telephone to schedule an interview. We match your assignment specific to your skills, interests and availability. Upon screening, we will determine requirements for Police Record Check. 

Step 3 - Volunteer Orientation 

Volunteers attend a mandatory General Orientation session, conducted by Volunteer Services. The Orientation provides important information about working in a hospital environment.  

Step 4 - Training Volunteers attend specific program training for their assignment. 

Step 5 - Start volunteering!

 

The Volunteer Services Program ensures that volunteers benefit the most when volunteering at HSN.  We are proud of the unique work environment that we offer and ensure that everyone has a positive experience.

  • Paid Parking  
  • Break and/or Lunch voucher 
  • Reference Letters 
    • Upon completion of 50 hours  
  • Medical School Reference Letters 
    • Must have volunteered at least one year, with a minimum of 100 hours 
  • Corporate Initiative and/or Memberships offers 
  • Invitations to Recognition Events 
  • Secondary School Cooperative Education Program
