Opioid Use

Also called narcotics, these medications are usually required for five days or less after your surgery.  It is important to follow the instructions on the prescription and to use the lowest dose possible for the shortest amount of time.

  • Never share with anyone else

  • Store securely in your home away from children and pets

  • Always take any unused medication back to your pharmacy for safe disposal

  • Overdose and addiction can occur

  • Avoid alcohol and sleeping pills

You may experience some side effects from your pain medications. These are often mild and easy to treat. Let your nurse or healthcare provider know if you experience any of the following:

  • Itching

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Unrelieved pain

  • Sleepiness

  • Feeling dizzy or lightheaded

  • Hallucinations
