Our Clinics

This expanded level clinic offers support for developing alternative ways to communicate for clients who are non-verbal or have significant speech difficulties. Communication aids like picture books and speech devices may be explored. When possible, the child should have be seen by a speech language pathologist before referring to this service. The ACC team is comprised of Speech Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, a Communicative Disorders Assistant, an Equipment Manager and a Technician.

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) services offered include:

  • Writing Aid assessment: for clients who have difficulty using their hands to write or to use a computer to write. Clients should have some basic literacy skills.
  • Early Augmentative Communication Workshop: for parent(s)/caregiver(s) of children who cannot independently communicate with at least 10 pictures/symbols. This workshop will help support caregivers in introducing Augmentative and Alternative Communication to their child. Helpful strategies and resources will be provided.
  • Consultation: with client’s community support team.
  • AAC Assessment: for clients who can independently communicate using at least 10 pictures / symbols in at least 2 different topics with at least 2 persons (exceptions made for clients with vision and physical impairments that impact their ability to point to pictures). If the client does not meet this minimum eligibility criteria, a referral to the Early Augmentative Communication Workshop should be considered as an alternative service request. Once a referral is accepted, the ACC Intake Questionnaire will be sent to client’s caregiver and needs to be completed before an assessment is booked.
