Out of Town Travel Options

The follow options might be helpful to patients who live out of town and have to travel long distances to get to their appointments at the Northeast Cancer Centre.

If you are in need of help getting a ride to your appointments at the Northeast Cancer Centre please contact the Supportive Care Program to speak with one of our social workers.

Warning: The following information may change. Please call the specific ride program for up to date information.

The Canadian Red Cross provides rides for seniors in their community. However, they

  • Must not be living in a Long Term Care facility.
  • Must be able to get in and out of the vehicle by themselves, or they can bring somebody to help them.
  • Are not able to use the bus and are not able to drive.

The cost depends on how far you have to travel.

Volunteer drivers are available throughout the East Parry Sound District, but they are also able to drive people in outlying areas such as North Bay, Sturgeon Falls, Astorville, Redbridge, Mattawa, etc.

Volunteer drivers use their own vehicle to take clients to medical appointments and are reimbursed for their mileage.

Ontario Works and ODSP clients must contact their worker to request this service.

 

Hope Air can help arrange free flights for patients who cannot afford the plane ticket to get to their appointments.

Volunteer drivers provide rides to clients living in Elliot Lake to medical appointments in Sudbury or Sault Ste. Marie.

Northern Health Travel Grant must be signed over to Huron Lodge.

NIHB covers travel, accommodations, and meals for status First Nations and Inuit patients and their required escort.

Volunteer drivers are able to provide rides to clients living in Blind River and area (from Thessalon to Spanish) to medical appointments in Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie. 

Fees include Travel Grants and a small fee to the client.
