Gustavo Ybazeta, Bsc, PhD

Scientist, Health Sciences North Research Institute
Adjunct Professor, Laurentian University

Gustavo is a Scientist and the founder of the Bioinformatics and Genomics office at the Health Sciences North Research Institute (HSNRI). He is also head of the wastewater surveillance initiative (WSI) for northeastern Ontario for the detection of SARs-CoV-2.

He completed a Bachelor’s degree in genetics at the Universidad of San Marcos, Peru, where he also worked in the Human Genetics laboratory doing Cytogenetics and peptide characterization. He then was awarded three Internships at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama, where he worked on the phylogeny and biogeography of tropical freshwater fish. After that, he managed a Human Genetics laboratory at the University of Chicago, working in Human population and Pharmacogenetics. His doctoral work, supported by a prestigious Connaught scholarship, was done at the University of Toronto. This experience gives him a strong background in genetic evolution, biogeography, bioinformatics, and a broad range of molecular technologies.

  • Microbiome/host interactions, specifically their impacts on health treatments and outcomes in Cancer patients, IBD and metabolic disorders.
  • Wastewater surveillance initiative (WSI) for northeastern Ontario for the detection of SARs-CoV-2 and developing wastewater surveillance methods for pathogens, surveillance of antimicrobial genes (AMR) and the detection of chemicals in Northern communities.
  • Bioinformatics pipelines for Next Generation Sequencing and implementing evolutionary medicine studies for the North.

He welcomes graduate students and technicians to join these projects among others.
