Tom Laughren

Tom Laughren is the Chief of the Timmins Fire Department, having taken on the role in April 2019 with 40 years of service as a volunteer firefighter. He has extensive experience in both the public and private sectors, earned over a career spanning several decades. A crane operator by trade, Tom worked in mining construction for 27 years, offering his expertise in quality assurance, purchasing, health and safety and construction management. He served as Mayor of the City of Timmins from 2006 to 2014 and as a city councillor from 1994 to 2003. Most recently, Tom was the Director of Corporate Responsibility for mining company Lake Shore Gold Corp. He has also provided health and safety courses and specialty training to a variety of student groups, including at the Northern College of Applied Arts and Technology.
In addition to his professional life, Tom is a devoted community member. He has served on a number of community boards and committees and volunteered with a variety of organizations, including the Ontario Northland Transportation Commission (Chair), the Timmins Police Services Board (Chair), the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities, the Ontario Association of Police Services Board (President), the Cochrane District Social Services Administration Board (Chair), the Porcupine Health Unit, the Timmins Economic Development Corporation, Northern College of Applied Arts and Technology, the City of Timmins Anniversary Celebration Committee (Chair, 2009-2012), the Timmins 2020 Community Strategic Plan Steering Committee (Chair), the Timmins Chamber of Commerce (President, 2004-2005), and many more. He is also the proud recipient of many awards, including the Queens’s Jubilee Medal, the Club Richelieu President’s Medal, and a Paul Harris Fellow Award for contributions to community as presented by his local Rotary Club.
