About the ADHD Clinic

The  Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Clinic is a nurse practitioner (NP) lead clinic that focuses on the early assessment and treatment  in the management of children, youth and families affected by ADHD.

Our clinic aims to:

  • Offer early access, diagnosis and treatment of acute/complex pediatric patients.
  • Promote early assessments and interventions to enhance outcomes for children, youth and families.
  • Address the needs of at-risk families, children and youth of Northern Ontario in a timely fashion
  • Support and maintain medical management of children, youth and families with ADHD
  • Identify and manage co-morbidities associated with ADHD
  • Increase self-esteem and improve quality of life
  • Improve coping skills and strategies around social functioning, self-regulation and self-confidence 
 

ADHD is one of the most prevalent neurobehavioral conditions in the pediatric population caused by a number of factors that can affect brain development and function.  It affects 5-12% of school-aged children; boys are three times more likely to be diagnosed than girls.

ADHD is characterized by a pattern of behavior, present in more than one setting (i.e. school and home), that can result in functional impairment in social, educational, or work settings.  As indicated in the 5th Edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV), symptoms are divided into two categories: inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity.  These include behaviours such as failure to pay close attention to details, difficulty organizing tasks and activities, excessive talking, fidgeting, or an inability to remain seated in appropriate situations.

ADHD is a known risk factor for children and youth’s social, mental health and educational development, especially if the disorder remains unrecognized and untreated.

 

ADHD is a diagnosis categorized according to the DSM-IV.  When diagnosing ADHD, a diagnostician looks for a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with functioning or development.

ADHD is diagnosed based on clinical assessment and information received from parents and teachers.

  • Medication
 

Only physicians or nurse practitioners can submit a referral to the ADHD clinic.

 Provider Referrals

Referrals are triaged according to inclusion and exclusion criteria to determine the child will be seen by a nurse practitioner or pediatrician.

ADHD referrals must be accompanied by the following three forms:

  1. Weiss Symptom Record II
  2. SNAP-IV 26 Form - Parent
  3. SNAP-IV 26 Form - Teacher
