Violence Intervention and Prevention Program (VIPP)

The Violence Intervention and Prevention Program (VIPP) provides a diverse array of victim support services in connection with violence.  Services are offered to both males and females of all age groups.

Services include:

  • Medical assessment and treatment
  • Forensic documentation and photography
  • Safety planning and risk assessment
  • Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) assessment and treatment
  • Community liaison
  • Pregnancy testing
  • Professional case consultation and review
  • Public education, advocacy and training
  • Court testimony
  • Client centered individual/group counselling
 

  • If you have experienced violence and require services, you may present at the Health Sciences North (HSN) Emergency Department triage and ask to have the VIPP Nurse On-Call paged.
  • The VIPP nurse will respond within 30-45 minutes to meet with you to discuss your treatment and forensic options.  Assessment is confidential.
  • If you are seeking Counselling Services, please call the program directly for information.
  • For urgent medical consultations, or if you are a referring agency, please call 705-523-7100 and ask Switchboard to page the VIPP Nurse On-Call.
 

Intimate Partner Violence is a crime in Canada.  It does not always involve physical violence, and can include other forms of maltreatment such as constant threatening, psychological/emotional, financial/material, spiritual and verbal abuse.  It can also include sexual assault. 

It is primarily committed by men against women, but can also be committed by women against men, or in same-sex relationships.  Intimate partner violence transcends all boundaries and stereotypes.  It is found at all income and education levels, in all social classes, religions, races and cultures.

Medical
  • Health assessment
  • Physical examination/injury assessment
  • Health teaching
  • Consultation/referral to Emergency Department physician for injury assessment/investigation
  • Community resource referrals
  • Safety assessment and planning
Forensic
  • Forensic documentation
  • Forensic photography
  • Forensic evidence collection
  • Assist with Police reporting (if client wishes)
Support/Referrals
  • Immediate crisis support and referrals to community agencies, as required
 

Sexual assault is any form of unwanted sexual activity that is forced upon a person without that person’s consent.  Sexual assault is a crime.  Sexual assault can range from unwanted sexual touching to forced intercourse.  A sexual assault may include the use of physical force, threats or intimidation. 

While most sexual assaults are perpetrated against women, both women and men can be sexually assaulted. 

Sexual assault goes beyond all boundaries and stereotypes.  It is found at all income and education levels, in all social classes, religions, races and cultures.

Sexual Assault Services We Provide:

  • Laboratory testing for pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections and HIV
  • Medications for pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections and HIV

  • Forensic photography of assault injuries
  • Forensic evidence collection (Sexual Assault Evidence Kit)
  • Assist with Police reporting (if client wishes)

Counselling
  • Client-focused trauma counselling
PARE (Pediatric Abuse Referral and Evaluation)  A specialized medical clinic for children 16 years of age or younger who have experienced sexual assault or physical abuse.  Services include:
  • Medical/forensic assessment and treatment
  • Counselling
  • Referrals to Children’s Aid Society (CAS)
  • Consultation
Human Trafficking (sex trafficking) 
  • Immediate crisis support, safety planning, community refferals and counselling
 

 

Voices for Women is a free community-based program that provides services to women 16 years of age and older experiencing trauma from historical sexual violence. 

If you are a woman who has experienced violence in the past and is looking for services, you may contact VOICES directly to set up an intake.  VOICES is a women safe space. 

We aim to assist women along their healing journeys by providing: 

  • Crisis support 

  • Group and individual counselling 

  • Psycho-educational workshops 

  • Safety planning 

  • Assistance with resource applications/documentation 

  • Public awareness education, training and advocacy 

  • Court support 

  • Resource library 

  • Social connection
