Focus on Indigenous Health

Tuesday, March 4, 2025

At HSN, we are committed to being an active participant in addressing health equity gaps for Indigenous patients and families while building stronger relationships with the Indigenous communities we serve.

We improved access to culturally safe care with voluntary self-identification for First Nations, Métis and Inuit patients and families. This change to the registration system will mean patients have more access to the broad range of culturally safe programs and services available at HSN. Identifying as Indigenous will allow patients to connect quickly with our Indigenous Patient Navigators who can provide additional support at treatment and clinic visits, help navigating the circle of care back to home hospital, travel arrangements and much more.

If you choose not to voluntarily self-identify, you can still access Indigenous patient navigation services by asking your healthcare provider to enter an "Indigenous Services Referral." This referral will connect you with the appropriate Indigenous Patient Navigator who can assist with your care needs.

We are thankful for our collaboration with Maamwesying Ontario Health Team, who is leading the voluntary self-identification work. Their guidance and partnership have been invaluable in enhancing culturally safe care for Indigenous patients.
