The Health Sciences North Foundation (HSN) is thrilled to announce a generous donation of $200,000 from Wheaton Precious Metals towards the CT Simulator Replacement Project at the Shirley and Jim Fielding Northeast Cancer Centre.
The CT Simulator is a vital component of radiation therapy, providing radiation oncologists with precise, state-of-the-art imaging to localize tumours and plan treatments with exceptional accuracy. Serving approximately 2,500 patients annually, the current CT simulator has been instrumental in delivering high-quality care, but is at end-of-life and in need of replacement. The new upgraded system will further improve patient outcomes.
“We are incredibly grateful to Wheaton Precious Metals for their generous support,” said Dr. Andrew Pearce, Head of Radiation Oncology at HSN. “This donation will help us provide even more accurate and effective treatments for our patients, ensuring they receive world-class cancer care closer to home.”
The advanced technology of the new CT simulator includes improved image quality and the ability to track tumour motion. This ensures radiation is precisely targeted to the tumour while sparing healthy tissue, leading to more effective treatments and better results for patients. The updated hardware and software will also enhance system performance, reliability, and security, keeping HSN at the forefront of cancer care.
While Ontario Health-Cancer Care Ontario provides funding for major equipment upgrades every nine years, additional support is needed to cover essential room renovations and upgrades required for the installation of the new CT simulator. This includes electrical work, flooring replacement, painting, and updated millwork. With the new equipment set to arrive by March 1, 2025, completing these renovations on time is critical to maintaining seamless patient care.
“In Northeastern Ontario, Wheaton stands proudly with our mining partner, Vale, to build stronger communities through investments in community programs and initiatives, like the CT Simulator Replacement Project,” said Randy Smallwood, President and Chief Executive Officer at Wheaton Precious Metals. “We’re proud to support the advancement of healthcare in the region through this contribution, which will enable Health Sciences North to continue to provide exceptional medical care to individuals and families navigating challenging time.”
Wheaton Precious Metals’ contribution brings the CT Simulator Replacement Project covers the entire cost of renovations to the suites and brings the campaign to a close. “We invite everyone to join us in thanking Wheaton Precious Metals for their continued generosity and making a positive impact on cancer care in Northeastern Ontario,” added Anthony Keating, Chief Executive Officer of the Health Sciences North Foundation. “Together, we are making sure patients receive the best care possible in their fight against cancer.”
