There is a new service at Health Sciences North (HSN) that brings care directly to individuals who want to withdraw, or reduce their use, from a substance such as alcohol or drugs.
Clients are met where they are located in the community, such as their home or other safe location.
The Mobile Withdrawal Management Service (MWMS), a service of HSN’s Mental Health and Addictions Program, is designed for clients (16 years of age or older) who cannot attend in-person services due to stigma, family responsibilities, lack of privacy, etc., and would benefit from in-home care. Care can be provided in-person, by telephone or virtually.
The service, launched in the fall of 2023, has seen great success.
Lyndsey Holder, Clinical Manager of the MWMS explains, "We are committed to providing clients safe, evidence-based care planning and interventions to support them and their loved ones while going through withdrawals from alcohol and/or other substances. Our passion lies in providing a smooth transition from acute withdrawals to longer-term treatment planning like residential treatment without the lengthy delays in accessing ongoing support, which is often a barrier to successful outcomes. It really is a hybrid community based program where magic happens from the comfort of their homes!"
Since its official launch last fall, the service has seen over 70 clients, representing over 650 visits.
Referrals are accepted from physicians, nurse practitioners, or other care providers. Clients can also self-refer by contacting the Mobile Registered Nurse (RN) Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 705-523-7100 through ext. 1829 for eligibility.
