Improving access to culturally safe care with voluntary self-identification for First Nations, Métis and Inuit patients and families

Monday, December 18, 2023

At HSN, we are committed to being an active participant in addressing health equity gaps for Indigenous patients and families while building stronger relationships with the Indigenous communities we serve.

As part of our commitment to providing culturally safe care for our patients, we are proud to announce the launch of voluntary self-identification at registration for our First Nations, Métis and Inuit patients.

This change to the registration system will mean patients have more access to the broad range of culturally safe programs and services available at HSN.  Identifying as Indigenous will allow patients to connect quickly with our Indigenous Patient Navigators who can provide additional support at treatment and clinic visits, help navigating the circle of care back to home hospital, travel arrangements and much more.

Deanna Jones-Keeshig, Director for Indigenous Health at HSN, is excited about this new process and the access it will provide to culturally safe care. “HSN is making progress on having a deeper understanding of Indigenous cultures and developing stronger partnerships with Indigenous communities and changes like this will improve health outcomes for patients and their families.”
