In case you missed it!
Sean Gilroy’s life took an unexpected turn in late 2022 when he suffered a sudden stroke.
Fortunately, Sean was a candidate for a procedure introduced at HSN in February 2020 called endovascular thrombectomy, or EVT, a specialized and time-sensitive treatment to remove a stroke-causing blood clot from a person’s brain.
“The way we treat stroke has remarkably changed in the last few years; we can now treat patients with very effective interventions like EVT. The EVT program at HSN is now offering this treatment to all eligible patients in Northeastern Ontario. Patients now have access to this treatment closer to their home, unlike before when they needed to transfer to centres in Southern Ontario. This reduces delay and improves their outcome following stroke. It’s not an individual but a true team and collaborative effort of many departments with support from our regional and provincial partners which made this happen,” said Dr. Ravinder Singh, Stroke Neurologist and member of Sean’s healthcare team.
“Planning, developing, and expanding the HSN Endovascular Therapy Program has been a successful and collaborative team effort. We are proud to be offering eligible patients from northeastern Ontario such specialized stroke care, closer to home. Thanks to the passionate, dedicated staff we have at HSN, and across our region, patients receive expert level care before, during and after an EVT procedure. The Northeastern Ontario Stroke Network thanks all teams and departments who play a role in stroke care and recovery. You are making a real difference in people’s lives,” said Susan Bursey, Regional Director, Northeastern Ontario Stroke Network.
Sean’s life-saving care was possible thanks to the dedication and expertise of dozens of staff and physicians from over 15 departments at HSN including the Acute Stroke Unit, Intensive Care Unit, Emergency Department, Medical Imaging, Intensive Rehabilitation Unit, and others. We are grateful for their dedication, and that of our regional partners, to providing quality care to the people of Northeastern Ontario.
