Health Sciences North Temporarily Relocates Helipad – April 1st, 2023

Tuesday, March 28, 2023

Starting April 1st, the Health Sciences North (HSN) helipad will be temporarily closed for routine roof repair and maintenance which is expected to wrap up by mid to late June.

In order to ensure timely access to critical and life-saving care for patients of Northeastern Ontario, Ornge helicopters will instead be landing at a temporary helipad on Southview Drive.

The south-end helicopter pad was chosen because of its close proximity to the hospital and will allow patients to access life-saving medical services efficiently. This location is a registered heliport with Transport Canada and meets all legislative requirements.

As a result, people in parts of Sudbury’s south end can expect an increase in helicopter activity. While there is no way to anticipate the number of landings, on average, you can expect about 5 daily occurrences.

HSN has taken all necessary measures to ensure patient services will not be impacted. We do apologize for any inconvenience this temporary routine maintenance may cause residents.

Whenever possible, ambulances will travel south on Southview Drive to the bypass to avoid residential areas and ensure the quickest route to transport patients to Health Sciences North for life-saving care.

While it is expected Ornge flights into the temporary helipad will have minimal or no impact on neighbouring properties, questions or concerns about Ornge operations can be e-mailed to communityrelations@ornge.ca. Ornge has a process to investigate community concerns.

If you would like to share any additional concerns, you can contact HSN’s Patient Relations team at 705-523-7100 ext. 3737 or patientrelations@hsnsudbury.ca

Thank you for your patience and understanding to ensure patients and families have access to life-saving care services during this time.
