The Surgical Program offers a comprehensive range of services spanning a wide continuum of care for surgical patients. Approximately 16,000 surgeries are performed each year in the specialty areas of neurosurgery, orthopedics, urology, oral/dental surgery, ear nose and throat (ENT), thoracic, cardiac surgery, vascular, plastic surgery, gynaecology, ophthalmology and general surgery. The hospital has a total of 17 operating room suites on the acute care site.

The Post Anesthetic Care Units, formerly known as our recovery rooms, are reflective of the operating room needs, with patient bay numbers matching the needs of the O.R.

There are four in-patient surgical units with a total of 117 surgical beds to care for patients post-operatively, as well as a separate endoscopy unit which performs over 8,000 endoscopic procedures per year including colonoscopy, gastroscopy and bronchoscopy.

The program is also responsible for instrument reprocessing and medical photography, as well as the Blood Conservation Program and Acute Pain Management Service.

The Pre-Admission Clinic provides pre-operative testing and screening for all patients who enter the hospital electively for surgery. The clinic sees approximately 1,200 patients per month.

Day Surgery Units care for patients returning home post-operatively on the same day of surgery.

The North East Joint Assessment Centre (NEJAC), a service offered by Health Sciences North, was established to reduce wait times for consults and surgery for patients in the Northeast region who suffer from hip and knee arthritis. This service meets the Canadian Orthopaedic Association and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care recommended time frame of offering surgery dates within 182 days of initial consult.

NEJAC requires a referral from a physician. NEJAC staff will contact the patient to set up a consultation with the Advanced Practice Physiotherapist (APP) within 6 weeks of receiving referrals. Acting as a liaison between patients and their health-care provider, the APP will conduct a comprehensive musculoskeletal assessment followed by treatment options that make sense. If it is determined that surgery is required, patients are given a choice between a preferred surgeon or the next available surgeon thereby reducing the wait time. If the patient isn’t ready or if surgery is deemed to be unnecessary, a comprehensive Plan of Care will be established allowing patients and their doctor or nurse practitioner to manage the symptoms going forward. There is no fee associated with NEJAC – it is covered under OHIP.
