Cardiac

As a comprehensive Regional Cardiac Centre for northeastern Ontario, the cardiac program was founded over 30 years ago and has become a focal point for community support achieving international recognition for its clinical services. New procedures both in the operating room and in the cardiac catheterization area, such as beating heart surgery, complex valve surgery, and percutaneous coronary interventions have kept  Health Sciences North's program at the leading edge of cardiac care.

Cardiac rehabilitation is an integral part of the continuum of health care provision to cardiac patients and acts as a resource to other programs in the northeast.  Health Sciences North is a part of the Cardiac Care Network of Ontario and a full participant in the provincial wait list strategy.

Consultation for Older Adults with Acutely Compromised Health (COACH)

The role of the team is to provide early assessment (preferably within 48 hours) of adults 65+ currently admitted to an inpatient bed.  The focus will be on those patients that have lost or are at risk to lose independence in their activities of daily living as a result of their acute illness.

The ultimate goal is to improve functional outcomes of seniors at hospital discharge, reducing the length of stay needed to achieve these outcomes, and resulting in decreased risk for hospital re-admission and becoming ALC awaiting long-term care placement.
