Clinical Trials and Clinical Research

As an academic health sciences centre, we are committed to providing learning and research opportunities for students, teachers, healthcare professionals, and researchers. Clinical Trials and Clinical Research are key components in anchoring our role as a leading academic health sciences centre in Northern Ontario.

What are Clinical Research Projects and what are Clinical Trials?

According to the Ontario Hospital Association :

  • A Clinical Research Project is one that requires informed consent.
  • A Clinical Trial is “a prospective biomedical or behavioural research study of human subjects that is designed to answer specific questions about biomedical or behavioural interventions (vaccines, drugs, treatments, devices, or new ways of using known drugs, treatments, or devices). Clinical trials are used to determine whether new biomedical or behavioural interventions are safe, efficacious, and effective. They include behavioural human subjects’ research involving an intervention to modify behaviour.”

HSNRI supports several clinical research projects and clinical trials. Please see the list of active clinical trials below.

  • Lessons learned from Clinical Research and Trials can help improve treatment and help others in the future.
  • Early access to promising new treatments may control your condition and improve your quality of life.
  • The ability to take an active role and make decisions about your care and treatment plan

Many cancer treatments used today are the result of past Clinical Trials

“I was given the opportunity to participate in a new five year research study. it was a commitment to be sure, but I was monitored closely and appreciated the care and support that I received.”

  • You have the right to decide if you wish to take part in the Clinical Trial.  The study will be explained to your and you will have time to decide to participate.  It is important to ask questions and to include your family members when making the decision to join a study.
  • You have the right to refuse to take part, or to stop taking part at any time.  You will continue to receive treatments, education and medical care that a patient would receive in the cancer centre.
  • We respect our privacy. Any information about your health and treatments will be kept confidential.
  • Research Ethics Board

At HSN and HSNRI we are committed to ensuring that researchers ‘strive to follow the best research practices honestly, accountably, openly and fairly in the search for and in the dissemination of knowledge’.

This includes:

Honesty in all aspects of research

Accountability in the conduct of research

Professional courtesy and fairness in working with others

Good stewardship of research on behalf of others

All research is expected to be conducted in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, institutional policies and professional or disciplinary standards.

Research at Health Sciences North Research Institute (HSNRI) is focused on improving care for patients in northern Ontario and around the world. One of the ways we do this is through clinical trials and research studies. Patients can play a crucial role in this process by volunteering for clinical trials, surveys or other clinical research studies.

When visiting Health Sciences North, you may be approached by trained research staff with a request to take part in a clinical trial or research study. Whether or not you participate is your choice, however, if you do, your participation is extremely valuable. The results from clinical trials help us study therapies and treatments that will improve the health of all patients.

The review and conduct of clinical trials at Health Sciences North and Health Sciences North Research Institute must comply with the guidelines, standards, and regulations of the Health Canada, Food and Drugs Act, Good Clinical Practice: Consolidated Guideline, the Tri-Council Policy Statement on Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans and legislation pertaining to disclosure of personal health information.

If you are interested in participating in a clinical trial, the best approach is to speak with your health care provider. You may also want to refer to Ontario Cancer Trials or Clinical Trials  Both of these websites provide a searchable database of clinical trials.
