Many cancer treatments used today are the result of past Clinical Trials

• You have the right to decide if you wish to take part in the Clinical Trial.  The study will be explained to your and you will have time to decide to participate.  It is important to ask questions and to include your family members when making the decision to join a study. 
• You have the right to refuse to take part, or to stop taking part at any time.  You will continue to receive treatments, education and medical care that a patient would receive in the cancer centre. 
• We respect our privacy. Any information about your health and treatments will be kept confidential.

Research at Health Sciences North Research Institute (HSNRI) is focused on improving care for patients in northern Ontario and around the world. One of the ways we do this is through clinical trials and research studies. Patients can play a crucial role in this process by volunteering for clinical trials, surveys or other clinical research studies.

When visiting Health Sciences North, you may be approached by trained research staff with a request to take part in a clinical trial or research study. Whether or not you participate is your choice, however, if you do, your participation is extremely valuable. The results from clinical trials help us study therapies and treatments that will improve the health of all patients.

The review and conduct of clinical trials at Health Sciences North and Health Sciences North Research Institute must comply with the guidelines, standards, and regulations of the Health Canada, Food and Drugs Act, Good Clinical Practice: Consolidated Guideline, the Tri-Council Policy Statement on Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans and legislation pertaining to disclosure of personal health information.

If you are interested in participating in a clinical trial, the best approach is to speak with your health care provider. You may also want to refer to Ontario Cancer Trials or Clinical Trials  Both of these websites provide a searchable database of clinical trials.
